Batumi: a guide
Batumi's season, its prices, and which part of town to stay in.
Batumi is a Black Sea resort and also a real city that is lived in all winter. That means it is worth visiting out of season, though you will find a quite different place.
When to go
- ·July and August are full, hot and the most expensive. Book ahead.
- ·June and September: the sea is warm, the crowds are gone and prices drop by about a third.
- ·October to May is wet. Batumi is the rainiest city in Georgia.
Getting there
- ·By air to Batumi airport, twenty minutes from the centre.
- ·By train from Tbilisi. Five to six hours, comfortable and cheap.
- ·By marshrutka or taxi. Six hours on the road.

Worth doing
- ·The boulevard, eight kilometres of it along the sea.
- ·Old Batumi and the Piazza.
- ·The botanical garden, north of the city.
- ·Gonio fortress and the beaches at Makhinjauri.
One thing worth knowing
The beach is pebbles, not sand. For sand go to Ureki or Shekvetili, an hour up the coast.
